Carefully follow all instructions to achieve the best results
Follow these post operative instructions for an implant and/or bone graft to speed healing. After surgery, it is normal to experience some soreness for a day or two following treatment.

Bleeding
Some slight bleeding after treatment is normal. However, if excessive bleeding occurs, apply firm pressure with a moist gauze pad or tea bag for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, call the office for further instructions.
Swelling
For the first 48 hours place ice packs on your face on an intermittent basis near the area of surgery. This will reduce the initial swelling and make you feel more comfortable.
Caring at home
Avoid brushing or chewing in the treated areas. 48 hours after the procedure, use salt water rinses 3 to 4 times a day:
- 1 teaspoon of salt to 8 oz. warm water
- Stir, rinse then dribble
Food and Drink
Eat soft food only, until you can chew without difficulty. Try cold cream soups, gelatin, ice cream, yogurt, or apple sauce. Do not drink liquids through a straw as the suction may damage the treated areas.
Medications
Follow directions on all medications carefully and fully. Continue to take all medications for the indicated length of time, even if symptoms are reduced.
Activity
Avoid strenuous exercise for the first 48 hours after treatment.
Smoking
Do not smoke for 2 weeks following surgery. We strongly recommend you stop smoking permanently. Smoking compromises the healing of any dental treatment.
Sutures
Do not worry if you have these also known as sutures. They are placed to control bleeding, aid in healing, and prevent food from collecting in the area. The sutures usually dissolve within 3-5 days and may not need removal.
